Upholsterer and interior decorator

What they do:

The work of upholsterers and interior decorators has evolved significantly over time. The term upholsterer comes from the French word tapisser, meaning to cover with fabrics or carpets. Originally, this trade focused on covering walls with textiles or tapestries; in South Tyrol, the first upholsterers were saddlers. Today, the focus is on interior design and decoration, creating comfortable and aesthetically pleasing living spaces. Their main tasks include upholstering all types of seating furniture, as well as designing and producing window decorations and curtains.

They also cover walls with fabrics, wallpaper, or other materials and install a variety of floor coverings. Upholsterers and interior decorators are experts in sun protection systems, shading solutions, and room dividers for both indoor and outdoor spaces. A strong sense of design and colour coordination is essential to harmoniously combine curtains, wallpapers, floors, and upholstered furniture, ensuring a cohesive and elegant interior concept. They often work according to plans or instructions from architects and interior designers, contributing their craftsmanship and creative input.

Many tasks are performed by hand, as machines and special tools are only partially suitable — especially when restoring or reworking antique or classic furniture.
